Magnetically Controlled Circulation on Hot Extrasolar Planets

چکیده
Through the process of thermal ionization, intense stellar irradiation renders Hot Jupiter atmospheres electrically conductive. Simultaneously, lateral variability in the irradiation drives the global circulation with peak wind speeds of order ∼ km/s. In turn, the interactions between the atmospheric flows and the background magnetic field give rise to Lorentz forces that can act to perturb the flow away from its purely hydrodynamical counterpart. Using analytical theory and numerical simulations, here we show that significant deviations away from axisymmetric circulation are unstable in presence of a non-negligible axisymmetric magnetic field. Specifically, our results suggest that dayside-to-nightside flows, often obtained within the context of three-dimensional circulation models, only exist on objects with anomalously low magnetic fields, while the majority of highly irradiated exoplanetary atmospheres are entirely dominated by zonal jets.

CHANGING FACE OF THE EXTRASOLAR GIANT PLANET, HD 209458b
High-resolution atmospheric flow simulations of the tidally-locked extrasolar giant planet, HD209458b, show large-scale spatio-temporal variability. This is in contrast to the simple, permanent day/night (i.e., hot/cold) picture. The planet’s global circulation is characterized by a polar vortex in motion around each pole and a banded structure corresponding to ∼3 broad zonal (east-west) jets. ...
متن کاملAtmospheric Circulation of Close-In Extrasolar Giant Planets: I. Global, Barotropic, Adiabatic Simulations
We present results from a set of over 300 pseudospectral simulations of atmospheric circulation on extrasolar giant planets with circular orbits. The simulations are of high enough resolution (up to 341 total and sectoral modes) to resolve small-scale eddies and waves, required for reasonable physical accuracy. In this work, we focus on the global circulation pattern that emerges in a shallow, ...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Atmospheric Circulation of Warm and Hot Jupiters: Effects of Orbital Distance, Rotation Period, and Nonsynchronous Rotation
Efforts to characterize extrasolar giant planet (EGP) atmospheres have so far emphasized planets within 0.05AU of their stars. Despite this focus, known EGPs populate a continuum of orbital separations from canonical hot Jupiter values (0.03–0.05 AU) out to 1 AU and beyond. Unlike typical hot Jupiters, these more distant EGPs will not generally be synchronously rotating. In anticipation of obse...
متن کاملDynamical Origin of Extrasolar Planet Eccentricity Distribution
In the past decade we have witnessed the discoveries of over 200 extrasolar planets, and the measurements of their unexpected dynamical properties. Specifically, the eccentricities of currently known extrasolar planets exhibit a distribution unlike that of the solar system, with moderately and highly eccentric planets being the rule rather than the exception. In this paper we explore a possible...
متن کاملAstrometric effects of solar-like magnetic activity in late-type stars and their relevance for the detection of extrasolar planets
Using a simple model based on the characteristics of sunspots and faculae in solar active regions, the effects of surface brightness inhomogeneities on the position of the photocentre of the disk of a solar-like, magnetically active star, are studied. A general law is introduced, giving the maximum amplitude of the photocentre excursion produced by a distribution of active regions with a given ...
